Professor John Simes

As former Director (2011 - 2018) John is responsible for overall leadership and direction of Sydney Catalyst. He continues to spearhead a number of novel programs being developed within Sydney Catalyst as well as driving connections through projects running across the member institutions.

Background:  

John, MBBS, MS, FRACP, MD is Director of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Clinical Trials Centre based at the University of Sydney. He is a Senior Principal Research Fellow of the NHMRC. He is also a practising medical oncologist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and lectures in Clinical Epidemiology, in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Sydney.

After almost 30 years, John is still inspired when a good idea turns into a trial that helps improve practice and gives patients better outcomes. 

Research Interests:  

John's teaching interests are in controlled trials, trials methodology and clinical decision making. His research interests include clinical trials design and methodology, quality of life assessment, cancer and cardiovascular trials and methods for combining evidence from several trials aimed at improving clinical practice.
