We are pleased to announce funding for the Nico van Zandwijk Travel and Education Award for 2018/2019. Our aim is to encourage training and development of outstanding researchers and clinicians from within Sydney Catalyst member groups and institutions, who have the potential to develop highly significant careers in cancer care and research, and meet the overall goals of Sydney Catalyst.

Professor Nico van Zanwijk retired in early 2017, but has been a great supporter and contributor to Sydney Catalyst since its inception. This award is intended to recognise the enthusiasm and dedication that Nico has shown to actively collaborating with and supporting our program.

Professor van Zandwijk's major research interest is in thoracic oncology. He founded the department of Thoracic Oncology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and was head of department from 1985 to 2008. In 2007, Professor van Zandwijk was asked to become the inaugural director of the purpose built Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI) in Sydney, one of Sydney Catalyst's founding member groups. Over the years he has been involved in many clinical trials, translational research and mentoring more than 20 students who have become research leaders in the own right. His and ADRI's involvement with Sydney Catalyst has included a significant and highly successful CINSW Translational Program Grant, pilot and seed funding, scholarships and other awards, plus active involvement in a range of working groups, committees and related activities.

The award will be given to a student or early-career researcher, particularly working in the field of thoracic cancer research, and wishing to undertake a related training and/or development opportunity, who satisfactorily addresses all eligibility and selection criteria. The Awardis open to all members, but priority will be given to members from regional and less established research units.
